Homo heidelbergensis is a taxon that was discovered in 1907. Specimens have been discovered from Kabwe ("Broken Hill") in Africa, Heidelberg, Germany, and Petralona, Spain.
H. heidelbergensis is intermediate in form, between Homo erectus and Homo sapiens, both archaic Homo sapiens and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis.
The fossils have been dated from 800,000 to 125,000 years ago, and overlap the time range for both Homo erectus and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis.
